Contributions to science
Current research
  • The thymus is constantly seeded by circulating hematopoietic progenitors that are originated from the bone marrow. These thymus-seeding progenitors (TSPs) undergo stepwise differentiation to generate immunocompetent T cells. I contributed to the identification and characterization of human TSP1 and TSP2 subsets. I discovered that cellular crosstalk-mediated activation of tumor necrosis factor receptor 2 (TNFR2) is important to expand human T cell precursors.

  • The mammalian Tribbles (TRIB) family, TRIB1-3, is classified as pseudokinases that act as adaptor molecules to regulate and integrate a wide range of signaling pathways. I contributed to the understanding of the roles of TRIB1-3 in malignant hematopoiesis. Despite being recognized as a myeloid oncogene, I discovered that TRIB2 has a tumor suppressor function in the development of NOTCH1-driven T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

  • Liang's lab is dedicated to unravel the pleiotropic roles of TNFR2 in human normal and malignant hematopoiesis, thereby contributing to a deeper understanding of human blood cell development and pathogenesis of blood diseases. Ultimately, we aim to advance the targeting of TNFR2 in the generation of novel blood cell therapy products and the clinical therapeutics for blood diseases.

  • In the context of human hematopoiesis, we are interested in:

  1. the regulation of TNFRSF1B/TNFR2 (mis)expressions

  2. cellular crosstalk that activates TNFR2

  3. signaling pathways mediated by TNFR2 activation

  4. biological and clinical relevance of TNFR2 (mis)expression
